SIG Combibloc Has the MES Tiger in the Tank

The Specialist in Packaging Has Opted for the Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
GUARDUS MES Operating at Seven Locations in Record Time

Manufacturing processes that are organised at the international level also need an internationally operating MES platform that provides a complete control of the production and quality management. Therefore, the specialist in pack-aging, SIG Combibloc, has implemented the Manufacturing Execution System GUARDUS MES at its seven locations all over the world: Germany, Austria, Thailand, China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, and the implementation took only two years. “With the support of our software partner GUARDUS Solutions AG, we succeeded in sending the entire software package for quality and production data acquisition as well as traceability and the SAP integration around the world at the speed of light”, said Dr Thomas Scheermesser, Head of Competence Pool Production Engineering at SIG Combibloc. Since the go-live of the initial plant in Wittenberg in February 2012, more than 1,150 users have been working with the GUARDUS MES. The software offers five language versions.

International software projects that impress through short periods of implementa-tion mostly have one thing in common: Already in the first stage of the planning, the organisational, functional, and technological fundaments are so established that they can cross borders. One of the central aspects is a high degree of stand-ardisation in the software instances, function packages, and synchronisation pro-cedure as well as in the final implementation processes in the plant. “Only a clearly conceived operation plan makes it possible to guarantee an optimum time man-agement, to reduce the downtime to a minimum, and to compensate the possible cultural differences efficiently”, explained Dr Scheermesser. Homogeneous soft-ware landscapes as well as the selection of the “right” local key users also contrib-ute to the success of dedicated implementation projects. Beyond that, a compe-tent and especially reliable partner is always indispensable. “Due to GUARDUS’ roll-out expertise, we not only had high planning reliability but also a strong risk management in the critical phases of the implementation”, continued Scheer-messer.
